The first game of Day 4 was a precursor to the Bronze medal game to be played at night between the same 2 teams.

The Japanese maintained a steady effort throughout the whole game kicking off the first quarter with 3 goals by Shimizu, Aoyagi and Shiota. BJ scored both goals for the Barbarians.

In the second quarter, Japan dominated the game scoring a total of 4 goals, 2 of them as penalty shots by Takei and Shimizu. Yanase also scored for Japan while Shiota scored the 4th goal in the last minute of the quarter. Blake Edwards and Dominic Foster scored for the Barbarians.

In the 3rd quarter the Barbarians finally got their attacking system to work and scored 3 goals to 1 with contribution from Dan Young at 5 metres, Jared Gilchrist scoring in extra man and BJ Howden scored a great centre forward goal in the last minute. Japan counted with a centre forward goal from Shimizu. The 3rd quarter ended with Japan holding a one goal advantage with a score of 7-8.

Japan started the final quarter with 2 goals inside the first 2 ½ minutes. The Barbarians fought back with a Dan Young goal on extra at 5.06, to bring the score back to 8-10. Both teams exchanged goal in the final 4 minutes, finish the game at 9-11 in Japan’s favour. Shimizu scored 4 for Japan, while BJ Howden scored 3 for the Barbarians.

aus  Fremantle Mariners 9 v 11 Partizan Belgrade jap 

A very determined Partizan and Fremantle came into the final of the 2011 Tom Hoad Cup tournament supported by a large and enthusiastic crowd. The spectators were treated to an exciting game where the scores were level until the end of the 3rd ¼.

Partizan started well scoring 4 of the first 5 goals, clearly setting the tone for the game. Obradovic, Luca Simic, Vukicevic and Gogov scored for the Belgrade team. The only Fremantle goal of the quarter was scored by Aaron Younger.

In the second quarter, the roles were reversed with Fremantle scoring 4 goals whilst Partizan only scored one by Ivan Rackov. The goal scorers for Fremantle side were Aaron Younger with 2, Daniel Lawrence scored in extra man while Tim Cleland scored the 4th goal at centre, ensuring that scores were level at half time.

The 3rd quarter opened up with 2 very keen teams to gain advantage over each other. Both teams scored 3 goals for the ¼. Jamie Beadsworth and James Fannon scored for Fremantle while Tim Cleland scored in extra man. For Partizan Vico and Vukicevic scored from centre while Vladimir Vujasinovic scored in extra man. The 3rd quarter ended with the game locked at 8 all with the large crowd eagerly anticipating the final result.

Supported by a loud and eager crowd, Fremantle player Aaron Younger scored the first and only goal of the quarter for the Mariners to take a 1 goal lead. Partizan answered quickly with an extra man goal from Rackov after Tim Cleland was excluded from the game with his 3 major foul.

Rackov again scored on counterattack at 5.01 to take a 1 goal lead for Partizan. Fremantle tried to get the answering goal, and peppered the frame, but could not slot the equaliser. Partizan score on extra thru Vukicevic to take a 2 goal advantage with 2.22 to play. Fremantle called 2 time outs but could not bridge the gap and Partizan ran out worthy winner being the 2011 Tom Hoad Cup Champions.

bronze medal match - 8.15pm - 9.15pm

aus Barbarians 9 v 7 Japan jap

The Barbarians open the proceeding with the first 3 goal to dominate the quarter leading 3-1. The Barbarian goal scorers were Tyler Martin, Dan Young on penalty, and AJ Roach scored on the counter. Takei score on extra for the Japanese.

The Barbarians again dictated the 2nd quarter scoring 3 goals to one with BJ Howden scoring from centre whist Bale Edwards scored on the counter, and Dan Young scored on extra, to going into ½ time 6-2 in front. The only scorer for Japan was Naganuma.

The Japanese launched a fight back scoring 4 goals to 1, with Naganuma scoring his 2nd goal for the game, Shimizu score an action goal at 5.31, and Takei score a brace to get the Japanese with 1 goal of the Barbarians at ¾ quarter time. Jared Gilchrist was the Barbarians only goal scorer for the quarter.

The final ¼ proved to be very close with Japan drawing level at 7 all with a Shiota scoring an action goal at 6.41. The Barbarians responded with an action goal from Dan Young, followed by a Blake Edwards extra man gaol to seal victory 2.38 minutes out. The Japanese tried valiantly but could not put the ball in the back of the net due to the outstanding Barbarians defence and the great work of the Australian Squad member Luke Quinlivan.

The Barbarians were worthy winners of the 2011 Tom Hoad Cup Bronze Medal winning 9-7.
