The Fremantle Mariners launched the Tom Hoad Cup with a very close win against Japan. Yusuke Shimizu from the Japanese team kicked off with the first goal of the game. Fremantle followed with 2 goals by Tim Cleland and Mitchal Ainsworth.
In the second half, the Mariners stayed strong with 2 more goals by Aaron Younger and Tim Neesham followed by another goal by Yusuke from Japan.
In the second half, Japan capitalised on the Mariners’ disorganised counter defence to score 3 more goals in the 3rd quarter with 2 by Shiota and 1 from Okawa. Aaron Younger and Tim Cleland both scored for Fremantle.
In the 4th and final quarter, Japan kept challenging Fremantle with goals by Aoyagi and Irei. The Mariners kept their 1 goal lead with Aaron Younger scoring his 3rd goal and Daniel Lawrence assured Fremantle the first win of the Tom Hoad Cup 2011 with a goal at 4.03 to hold out Japan.

The second game of the tournament was another very close game between Partizan Belgrade and the Barbarians.
Partizan was in command of the game in the first quarter with 2 goals from Suranji and Vukicevic. Jared Gilchrist scored for the Barbarians.
In the second quarter the Barbarians kept the pace with 2 more goals by Tyler Martin and BJ Howden while Partizan were held to one goal by Vukicevic with his second. The half finished at 3-3.
Partizan certainly showed their strength by dominating the second half of the game with a total of 6 goals against the Barbarians 3. Zivojinovic, Suranji and Asanovic scored for the Serbs in the 3rd quarter while Young and Edwards scored for the Barbarians. In the 4th and final quarter, Ilic, Rackov and Vukicevic again secured the win for the Partizan team with one final goal for the Barbarians by Dan Young.

The first day of the Tom Hoad Cup finished on another very close game between the Fremantle Mariners and China.
The first quarter saw the teams finished with 2 goals each, for the Mariners’ Tim Cleland and Jamie Beadsworth scored whilst for China Pan Ning and Liang Nianxiang lead the way. The exclusion of the Chinese player Junliang after 3 personal faults in the first quarter had a big impact on the chinese defence.
The Fremantle team easily dominated the second quarter with 5 goals scored almost consecutively. Tim Cleland, Joel Swift, Daniel Lawrence and 2 goals by Luca Altieri securing a 7-4 lead at ½ time. Chufeng and Nianxiang scored for the Chinese team at the end of the second quarter.
The Chinese team came back in the second half scoring 5 goals against 4 for Fremantle. Fehiu and Li scored for China in the 3rd quarter while goals by Sam Quinn, Joel Swift and James Fannon assured the Mariners kept their advance.
The final quarter proved to be the strongest one for the Chinese team with 3 goals by Fehiu and Li with a final one by Pan Ning with only 27 seconds to go in the game. Aaron Younger scored the only goal of this quarter for the Fremantle team.
